Case of the Month: Nine-month-old male black bear

Signalment: Nine-month-old male black bear (172 lbs)
Presentation:After playing very hard with a barrel two weeks ago, the bear now has a lump on its left carpus (wrist).
Image:A radiograph of the arm was focused on the carpus by using a special dye injected into the swelling.
Diagnosis: The dye stayed within the lump, so veterinarians know the lump was not in the joint but over the joint, which is called hygroma.

Treatment: The hygroma was surgically removed. The bear is moving well and without lameness today.
